This ongoing class is for dedicated young artists with a passion for drawing, painting and sculpture. Practice a variety of classical and contemporary techniques with an emphasis on strengthening observational and technical skills. Explore the elements of art and design through a series of projects designed to stimulate the imagination and promote artistic development. Great artists and art movements throughout history provide inspiration for the use of charcoal, ink, pastels, watercolour and acrylic. (Only intermediate level students with substantial drawing and painting experience may register for this course.)

ART AND DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS (ages 6 -11)
What do Colour, Texture, Shape, Space and Line all have in common? These are the fundamentals of all art and design. In this enriching course children will explore these elements of design in many different projects. This is a wonderful introduction to drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and the process of invention. Using pencil, pastel, watercolour, acrylics, ink, and plaster children will learn to produce unique works. Students will also be exposed to at least one form of printmaking each term, taking drawing to a different level. Projects will also focus on problem solving, media literacy, and design technology.

ART FOR ART’S SAKE (ages 6-11)
Art for Art’s Sake will enable children to expand their art knowledge and explore variety of media and techniques. We will study a work of an artist as our starting point and using different materials each week such as paint, charcoal, pastel, clay, wire, old photos, found objects and so on, we will make our own interpretation of that work. The course will focus on developing basic skills and individual expression while experimenting with sculpture, print making, drawing, painting and more!

CARTOONING AND CARICATURES (ages 6-11)
Have a great time learning to illustrate caricatures and characters with emotion using various illustration techniques and colour. Create your own animation with multi media projects such as flip books and thaumatropes! All these classes are designed for young future cartoonists with humour and originality in mind.

DRAW, PAINT, PRINT (ages 6-11)

This class is a wonderful introduction to 2 dimensional art making and art history for children with little or no background in drawing and painting. Using pencils, ink, pens, pastels, tempera, watercolour and acrylics, children will learn to produce unique and visually striking images. There will also be one printmaking project per semester. Projects will focus on technique building, observation and imagination.

NEW! OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING (ages 8-12)
This class offers young artists an opportunity to develop observational and technical skills through an in-depth exploration of drawing media. Learn classic and contemporary techniques for sketching and drawing with pencil, charcoal, ink and pastels while you explore line, shape, value, perspective and proportion. Drawing assignments include still life, landscapes, cityscapes and the human figure. There may be some outdoor drawing excursions. (Excellent foundation for other courses.)

FASHION DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION (ages 6-11)
Learn how to design, draw and create a fashionable figure. Projects will include, modern dress, accessories, historical and theatrical costuming! Students will learn how to make stylized renderings of their own unique clothing designs on the figure. The use of contour line, colour theory, presentation skills, mapping the face, texture and patterning will be explored to create great layout boards. A combination of mixed media including watercolour, paint, pen, coloured pencils and markers, as well as pastels will be used.

FINE ART STUDIO (ages 6-11)
This multi media course takes its inspiration from the works of historical and contemporary master artists. Learn about great works of art and artists, then experiment with a variety of materials and techniques to create your own artistic masterpieces. Use pencil, charcoal, acrylics, plaster and mixed media to explore the wide world of art through a series of fun, imaginative exercises and projects with an emphasis on developing creative skills.

Students will learn challenging medieval techniques in egg tempera painting, gilding on wood, relief mosaic tile work and stained glass murals. No prior art experience necessary just the willingness to try something new, or in this, case something really old.

Learn about many different paint techniques; in acrylic, gouache, ink, oil pastel to watercolour. Instructors will guide students through many different paint techniques with demonstration as well as introducing many genres of painting through the ages by various masters. Create still life, landscapes, portraits and mixed media masterpieces.

NEW! PAINTING ANIMALS(ages 8-12)
This is your chance to create an original portrait of your pet. Whether it’s a fish, your cat or the dog of your dreams, we’ll use photos for reference and create a variety of projects that lead to the final portrait. Animals have been a subject in art since the beginning of time. We’ll look at the horse in cave paintings, the adored cat of Egypt and the dog in 19th century painting; how were these paintings created and how will they inspire you to paint your pet?
