Discover the world of textiles through a range of diverse techniques and projects. Learn tie-dye, batik, felting, silk painting, and more. Explore the multi-use applications employed in making a whole range of items and products including fashionable garments, industrial design, and art. Learn about the cultural history of textiles from East to West, and North to South. This class is ideal for the complete beginner.

 

LIFE DRAWING & PAINTING
(BEGINNER-ADVANCED)

Explore the human figure while working with a live model. The focus of this course is on different ways to capture form, movement and expression through short gestures, longer and sustained poses. Aspects of anatomy, skeletal and musculature will be covered as well as some portraiture. This course is ideal for students wanting to strengthen observational skills, and pursue figurative painting, portraiture, fashion illustration or animation.

PORTRAITS IN PASTEL & PAINT
(BEGINNER-ADVANCED)

Explore the fascinating world of portraiture. This course is designed for the absolute beginner. Simple approaches will be demonstrated in a step-by-step format. We will focus on basic drawing techniques, human anatomy, composition, colour strategies, and the psychological aspect of the genre. Students will acquire the fundamental skills and techniques to conquer portraiture drawing in chalk pastels or in different paint mediums. Learn how to create a likeness and develop the unique attributes of your sitter.

 

WATERCOLOUR AND MIXED MEDIA
(BEGINNER-ADVANCED)

In this step by step approach to colour theory and painting, students will explore the watercolour medium. Building from a series of exercises in colour mixing, brushwork, glazes and washes, and learning dry brush and wet-on-wet technique, students will complete several finished paintings. Working from both the study and photographic reference, subject matter will range from still-life to landscapes to the student’s own choice of imagery.

 

LANDSCAPE ESSENTIALS

Start with the basic essentials for landscape painting. Instruction starts with clear explanations and step-by-step demonstrations of the basic principles of landscape painting. Emphasis will be given to simple approaches on how to draw and paint nature, specifically trees and cloudscape. Students will have individual freedom to explore a variety of styles and techniques that will give you a professional perspective.

Whether you want to learn to draw or paint, rekindle your creative ideas or learn new technical skills with new approaches, this course is designed for you. Engaging subjects such as portraiture, landscapes and still life will develop the understanding of different painting styles and techniques. Beginner students will study simple techniques to understand the use of charcoal, pencil, ink, watercolour and acrylic that will build a solid foundation. Basic drawing and painting skills and colour theory strategies as well as art material knowledge will give students the freedom to ignite powerful creative ideas that lead to mastering their artistic challenges.

INTRO TO DRAWING, PAINTING & SCULPTURE
(BEGINNER)

This class is ideal for the complete beginner interested in skill building. Students will learn both traditional and experimental art techniques through a step by step process. Each term focuses on a new medium anchored by drawing and painting. FALL: Introduction to dry and wet mediums include drawing and painting in pencil, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, watercolour and acrylic paints. Subjects are portraiture, landscape, and still-life. WINTER: Introduction to Sculpture through various 3D materials including clay and plaster, with additional drawing and painting exercises. SPRING: Introduction to printmaking techniques including relief, monoprints, silkscreen and collagraphs. Various studio applications will involve a combination of materials and techniques to create a mixed media finished work. Drawing and painting exercises will be ongoing. Weather permitting; students will also be encouraged to work outdoors in the natural habitat for some projects.

 

INDEPENDENT STUDIO
(INTERMEDIATE-ADVANCED)

This course is for those students who have taken drawing or painting before and now wish to develop their ideas, style and techniques more independently. An instructor will be available to assist, guide, and discuss questions relating to any part of the process. Students are encouraged to explore and take risks in their work. Individual (one to one), as well as group critiquing sessions are a very important part of the course.
